The Pandemic Lockdown Diaries

Day 120

“Day 120 or the Great Realisation…”

It has finally occurred to me what has happened over these last 120 days of the National Lockdown…

Brace yourselves, people, the truth maybe hard for some to hear.

“We’re all 13 again!”

Seriously, in fact, it is like being 13 again…

Curfew, no joy rides, no parties, no sleep overs, no smoking, no drinking.

And most definitely, NO strange boys, by which they mean the late night Uber Eats delivery guy…

America On Fire

Last Monday, people the world over watched the video of a man, we now know to be George Floyd, dying at the hands of 4 police officers.

One week later, we see curfews imposed and the National Guard called in many states, after widespread rioting, looting and arson.

Whilst Mr. Floyds may have been the match that lit a powder keg of events currently unfolding, it hardly seems unlikely that it is the sole reason behind it.

Simple Glazed Donut Recipe

About 2 weekends ago, my mom was bake sausage rolls and curry chicken pastries, and decided that she felt like making something sweet.

Eventually, we settled on making donuts. Here’s the recipe we used:

Donut Ingredients:

• 1 cup (240ml) whole milk, lukewarm.
• 1 packet active dry yeast(10g).
• 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar.
•2 large eggs.
• 6 Tablespoons (86g) butter, melted and slightly cooled.
• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract.
• 4 cups (490g) all-purpose flour (spoon & leveled), plus more as needed.
• 1/2 teaspoon salt.

Simple Hacks for Saturday Night Dinner or Date Night Cooking

Please note that these product reviews have been written independently, and are not sponsored by the the business named below, they are merely where I purchased the products from.

If you’re anything like me, Saturday night dinner isn’t something that you really feel like doing the whole Go-Big-Or-Go-Home for. Especially when you’ve been at home for 66 days under the National Lockdown.

Alternatively, you might find yourself in the same situation as my friend, Robyn, who has a toddler and recently had her first “Date Night” and was stuck on what you feed adults when your child loves spaghetti, meatballs and broccoli.

Fear not, I have some ideas…

Netflix & Chill

After Life, a worthwhile binge watch…

The web series created by, written and starring Ricky Gervais is fantastically relatable to anyone who has every lost a partner or spouse…

Day 32

“Day 32 – Freedom Day under Lockdown”

Today, I am writing this post earlier than normal but it seems appropriate.

Today, I want to say how grateful I am for the leadership that has been shown by so many during the National Lockdown.

I don’t think it can be stressed enough how necessary it was to institute the National Lockdown, in order to prevent the rampant spread of COVID-19.

I’d also like mention that the Republic of Cuba has sent 200 medical doctors to South Africa, to help us fight against this pandemic.

Many people may be aware of my feelings regarding economic sanctions against nation states, but if not, I truly believe sanctions are economic terrorism. More especially, against countries such as Cuba and Iran.

Getting tested for COVID-19

More and more, there seems to be a great deal of misinformation regarding how exactly COVID-19 is diagnosed…

Tamiflu, chest x-rays a few days later… I’m going to be straight with you… It’s ALL bullsh*t. Really.

Having been through the experience, I explain the general process…

Crude, Crypto & Cash

The Day Most Never Thought They Would See…

Yesterday, the US Crude Oil (West Texas Intermediate) futures fell below $0 USD.

Yes, you read that correctly. The WTI oil futures lost over 100% of their value finishing at a record low of -$37.63 per barrel.

Strangely enough, at the same time, Russia’s Urals blend was trading at $24.55 per barrel and the June index for Brent Crude was settled at $25.57 per barrel.

One of the biggest issues for all oil producing nations isn’t the ability to extract, but storage.

With the record lows in demand at the moment, and the glut in supply, it’s hard to see the WTI futures rebounding in the next month or two…

My personal opinion is it will probably take at least 6 months for the markets to reach some sort of equilibrium; and this might very well be the death blow to the US Shale market.

The Pandemic Lockdown Diaries…

As of midnight March 26, 2020, South Africa has entered a National Lockdown to try prevent the spread of COVID-19.

So I have dedicated a small section of the website to the Pandemic Lockdown Diaries…

I have included my own personal experience about being hospitalised and tested for COVID-19.
